Find the Right Fit

How to Measure for Curtains?

Follow our simple guide to get the perfect length and width for your space.

Easy Measuring, Perfect Fit

Measuring for your curtains has never been easier with MrsAwesome. Our Measurement Tool puts sizing right at your fingertips. Or simply follow our clear and simple steps measuring guide below to get the perfect fit every time..

Step 1: Start by Measuring Your Window or Door

If the curtain rod is already installed:

  • Width: Measure the curtain rod from end to end.

  • Height: Measure from the bottom of the curtain rod (or the hook, if applicable) down to the floor.

If the curtain rod is not yet installed:

  • Recommended Rod Width: We suggest extending the curtain rod 6"–10" beyond each side of the window. This allows enough space for the curtains to stack back when opened, preserving the full outside view.

  • Recommended Rod Height: For a taller, more spacious appearance, install the rod 4"–6" or more above the window frame, ideally as close to the ceiling as possible.

Step 2: Decide on the Width of Each Panel

For Flat-Top Styles ( Back Tab & Rod Pocket, Grommet):

  • Panel Width Formula:
(Rod or track width × Fullness factor) ÷ Number of panels.

For Pleated Styles (Goblet Pleat, Inverted Box, Triple Pleat, Pinch Pleat):

  • Panel Width Formula:
Rod or track width ÷ Number of panels.

(No need to multiply by a fullness factor, as pleats already include fabric for fullness.)

If the rod or track is not installed yet, use:

  • Window width + 6–10" on each side to estimate total rod/track width.

Step 3: Decide on the Length of Each Panel

For Flat-Top Styles ( Back Tab & Rod Pocket, Grommet):

  • Panel Length Formula:
Rod-to-floor height+ Bottom length (see "Curtain Bottom" options).

For Pleated Styles (Goblet Pleat, Inverted Box, Triple Pleat, Pinch Pleat):

  • Curtain rings are typically 2 inches high.
  • Formula: Rod-to-floor height + Bottom length − 2".

Step 4: Choose a Curtain Bottom Style (Finished Length Type)

Clean & Tidy:

Hangs ½" above the floor – easy to clean.

Touching:

Just touches the floor – elegant and natural.

Breaking:

Extends ~3" beyond the floor – slightly breaks for a relaxed look.

Sweeping:

Extends ~5" beyond the floor – stylish and dramatic.

Puddling:

Extends ~7" onto the floor – luxurious, best for formal settings (not ideal for frequent opening/closing).
